Lions kicker with UFL roots reacts to Michigan Panthers relocation rumors
According to Pro Football Newsroom’s James Larsen, the Michigan Panthers — Bates’ former team in the United Football League (UFL) — are among four teams rumored to be relocated ahead of the league’s upcoming season. The others are the Houston Roughnecks, the Birmingham Stallions, and the Memphis Showboats.

A local source confirmed that the professional United Football League is interested in moving a franchise to the Columbus.
The Michigan Panthers were knocked out of the UFL playoff semifinals by the Birmingham Stallions, who completed a second-half rally to beat Michigan, 31-18, for the second straight week.
Bates, of course, has been the story of the Panthers' season, since he made a 64-yard field goal to lead Michigan to victory in the season opener. It was his first made field goal in any game.
