Despite Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 being federal holiday many services for the public will still be open. That includes mail delivery because the US Postal Service will run as usual on the two days and post offices will remain open. The only day they will be closed is on Christmas Day.

Throughout history, December 25 was widely considered more of a religious holiday and ‘holy day’ spent resting and worshipping, rather than a day of celebrations. This is why, in certain parts of the world, Christmas dinner is eaten on December 24. and Christmas breakfast on the morning of December 25.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to give federal workers off on December 24 and December 26 this year, creating a five-day holiday break.

Some federal workers will have a longer holiday break this year. In an executive order issued Thursday, President Trump declared that Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 will be federal holidays this year, meaning that federal departments and agencies will be closed.

President Trump issued an executive order adding Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 as temporary federal holidays in 2025, closing most federal offices but not forcing banks or the U.S. Postal Service to shut down.
