JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia freed and deported an American man Tuesday after he spent 11 years in prison for the premeditated murder of his then-girlfriend’s mother on the island of Bali, but he’s still on the hook for federal charges back home.
In what could be the start of the final chapter in a story that that has captivated attention worldwide, the man convicted of helping his ex-girlfriend kill her mother and stuff her in a suitcase made his first appearance today in a Chicago courtroom.
The man convicted in the notorious killing of his former girlfriend's mother in Bali back in 2014 pleaded not guilty in Chicago Thursday.
Schaefer had been serving an 18-year sentence in Indonesia for beating von Wiese-Mack to death, and was expected to land in the U.S. before the hearing Thursday morning. He was not yet in U.S. custody Tuesday.
