The redistricting map now advancing through the House would add Liberty County to TX-9, unlike the map under consideration in the Senate. The district has long been represented by Democratic U.S. Rep.

The biggest proposed changes are in Houston, the Dallas-area, Austin and South Texas, where several districts currently held by Democrats are remade to be more favorable to Republican candidates,

With Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott set to sign into law a new map of the state’s congressional districts, The Cook Political Report is changing the ratings of five 2026 House races to reflect the shifting political realities in the Lone Star State.

The House map was then passed by a Senate committee Thursday morning and could get a vote before the full Senate as early as Thursday night.

Democratic members slammed the process, questioning why hearings were happening before maps were available for review. Chair Cody Vasut said follow-up public hearings will be scheduled once maps are filed.

The map’s passage was a major victory in President Trump’s push to get Republican state leaders to help his party keep control of the U.S. House.
