The Supreme Court’s conservative majority appeared poised Tuesday to allow states to ban transgender athletes from playing on girls’ and women’s sports teams.

At least half of the states in the nation have bans on transgender students competing in sports according to their gender identity, a USA TODAY review of state laws and policy documents found.

At the center of the case is Lindsay Hecox, a senior at Boise State University who sued over Idaho’s 2020 law banning transgender girls and women from playing women’s sports.
