Chicago Bears offseason approach got a little more aggressive after Kansas City Chiefs take top priority out of free agency market.

The New England Patriots need to fix their offensive line. However, getting a top offensive lineman in free agency might be harder than anticipated. This time, it’s Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith, who was expected to be the top overall offensive lineman to hit free agency this offseason.

The Chiefs can put a franchise tag on Trey Smith beginning Tuesday through March 4 and teams like the Bears who could have interest would find it tougher acquiring the prized guard.

The Kansas City Chiefs need to improve their offensive line this offseason. They also have to resign their top lineman to a new deal. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes needs to be protected.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Trey Smith, keeping the veteran guard under contract through the 2025-26 campaign.

Thursday brought word that the Chiefs were going to use a franchise tag to keep right guard Trey Smith from hitting the open market and Friday brought confirmation.

The Kansas City Chiefs' top priority this offseason should be re-signing Trey Smith. He is the top offensive lineman available and is in line for a massive payday.

It looks as though former Tennessee Vol standout Trey Smith isn't going to test the market and get his big payday after all. At least not outside of Kansas City. The Chiefs are reportedly putting the franchise tag on their standout guard two weeks before the start of free agency.
