Patriots starting cornerback Christian Gonzalez is in concussion protocol after being ruled out of Sunday's 16-3 playoff win over the Chargers.

The Patriots cornerback returned to the practice field on Wednesday after suffering a head injury in Sunday’s Wild Card win over the Chargers. Gonzalez was participating in drills in a red non-contact jersey, which suggests he’s in either Stage 3 or 4 of the NFL’s 5-step “return to participation protocol.”

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga were both on the practice field for the Patriots on Wednesday.

Gonzalez exited the game after hitting his head on the turf while in coverage against Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston. The Patriots initially ruled him questionable to return, but later downgraded him to out after he went into the locker room for evaluation.
