The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP for short) was on its way. It was the first international space mission – and the last flight of an Apollo spacecraft.

Apollo-Soyuz was emblematic of a détente in the Cold War. This provided an opening for the joint space mission, which President Kennedy first proposed in the early 1960s.

After the Apollo-Soyuz mission, Stafford returned to the Air Force and worked in research and commanded the Air Force Flight Test Center before retiring in 1979 as a three-star general.
