September 26th - on this day in 1983, the crewed Soyuz T-10-1 mission was to launch two Soviet cosmonauts to the Salyut 7 space station, when - with less than 90 seconds remaining to liftoff - their Soyuz U rocket caught fire. The launch escape system pulled the capsule with cosmonauts Vladimir Titov and Gennadi Strekalov away from the fully fueled rocket, which exploded seconds later.
