When Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) ignites, foam alone cannot extinguish the fire. Instead, the water content within the foam freezes on contact with the cryogenic liquid, forming an ice layer on the LNG surface. The foam above this ice layer also solidifies to a few centimetres in depth. Through this frozen layer, LNG vapours create ‘ice tubes’, which allow vapour to escape and continue burning above the non-frozen foam surface.
